What is Fascia?

Fascia is a network of connective tissue comprised of elastin and collagen  that surrounds every structure of the body. The fascial system interacts with every other bodily system, and is particularly influential on the neuromuscular system. When fascial restrictions develop from injury, repetitive strain or bracing patterns, and even surgeries, it acts like a strait jacket inside of the body. This creates immense pull and pressure on pain sensitive structures, including bone, muscle, nerves, tendons and ligaments. Many times restriction through the fascial system can produce a wide array of symptom complexes and dysfunction in the body and pain can often be caused by restrictions located far from the area of symptoms. These restrictions not only create pain and limited range of motion, but can increase the risk of  further injury during activity.  The fascial system is commonly ignored by traditional approaches to pain and seemingly strange symptom patterns. Standard diagnostics and imaging tests such as x-rays, MRI and CT scans are unable to detect or see fascial restrictions, so many patients can be left frustrated and without answers to their pain.
